The GDC eBook:
What Game Developers Think of Generative AI

In case you missed it, the organizers of Game Developers Conference (GDC), Informa, have released a supplementary eBook based on the responses to the 2024 State of the Game Industry Survey, providing insights and data never seen before on Generative AI. The report shows a behind-the-scenes look into what game developers think of GenAI – its potential, obstacles and current usage. Please note that this eBook is based on additional sentiments from the 2024 State of the Game Industry Survey, and the results of next year’s 2025 State of the Game Industry survey will be revealed in the coming months.

Key Highlights:

  • Adoption – Over 30% of game developers say they’re using Generative AI tools on the job, and others have expressed interest in adopting these tools.
  • Regional Differences – East Asian studios are more receptive to Generative AI: 70% of Asian studios use the tools, compared to 42% of developers in North America.
  • Uses & Cautions – While there are opportunities for GenAI in level design, NPCs, and procedural generation, some argue it should only be used as an assistance tool, not as a replacement for creative roles.
